A
Phoenician inscription from Cyprus
Rectangular
base of white marble, 38 cm x 34 cm, 8 cm high. The lower part of the block is
rather roughly hewn, A cross is engraved on it, probably at a later period. At
the upper part of the block there is a depression at its three sides (except
the front part); the depth of this depression is 1 cm, sloping up to the front.
One back corner os the depression has a rectangular perforation through the
block, which is filled with lead. At the diagonally opposite front corner there
is a second rectangular perforation, with a short groove at one of its corners.
The tool’s marks are visible at the bottom of the depression. The front part of
the block which is very smooth is engraved with a Phoenician inscription in
three lines. One corner is damaged. The block is said to have come from the
fields round the church of Panayia Angeloktistos of the village of Kiti Cyprus
The
inscription contains of three lines.

Translation:
1.In the
month Etanim of the 42nd year of the king Pumayyaton and Idalion,
son of the king Milkyaton, king
2.of Kition
and Idalion. This is the statue, which was dedicated and offered by Abdo, son
of KLKY, son of Abdo, son of šamor, [….] the Rab
3.[….]for
his son KLKY to his lord Ešmun, because he has heard his voice. That he
benefits me.

42nd year of Pumyyaton in Kition and Idalion = 320/19 BC.

The name
